Attractions in the neighbourhood of Etna Quota Mille
The town of Randazzo is a medieval village boasting monuments of rare beauty, most of which date back to the 12th century. To mention a few: the basilica of Santa Maria, St. Martin's and St. Nicholas'. Moreover, the rural art museum housed in an old 12th-century manor and the archaeological museum with dioramas.
For ski lovers, well-equipped Piano Provenzano is only 17 miles away. In the summer, visitors can reach the central crater of the volcano yhanks to specialized transport companies.
In Maniace, about 10 miles away, you can visit the Nelson's castle. It was built as a church in 1173 by order of Queen Margherita to commemorate the victory of Giorgio Maniace in a battle against the Saracens. The abbey become property of the Ospedale Grande e Nuovo di Palermo (Palermo New City Hospital) until 1779 when Ferdinand III presented Admiral Horatio Nelson with the castle to reward him for putting down the revolt in the Neapolitan Republic.
